Limited recovery in the labour market 2015-03-31

The slightly positive tendency of the employment rate in the first six months of the year 2014 has also manifested itself in the second half of the year 2014.

Nevertheless the economic growth still remains too limited in order to permit a real upsurge of the labour market. Compared to the same period of 2013, the salaried employment rate has slightly increased in the fourth quarter of 2014, such as it appears from the statistics of the NSSO for the fourth quarter of 2014.

Global view

On December 31th 2014 the total number of jobs was 0.6% higher than a year before. The tendency of the volume of labour measured in full-time equivalents was biased during the fourth quarter of 2014 as a consequence of the general strikes at the end of 2014. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2013, a slight global decrease of 0.2% of the volume of labour in full-time equivalents has been measured for the fourth quarter of 2014. When adjusted for the effect of the general strikes, the volume of labour would probably have risen by 0.1% during the fourth quarter of 2014.

The global image remains the one of a partly improving labour market, which is characterized by a rise in the use of temporary agency work but which is also confronted with the effects of restructuring (amongst others in industry and in the financial services sector) and of a shrinking of the government budgets (amongst others in the building industry and in public administration).
